Discussing Bachelor's Programme With Faculty

As part of our commitment to the continuous quality improvement of our academic offerings, the Applied Mathematics Department hosted a curriculum review meeting on December 8. The session brought together the faculty members involved in delivering the undergraduate Educational and Professional Programme in "Machine Learning and Mathematical Modelling" (formerly "Data Science and Mathematical Modelling" prior to 2025). The meeting featured key contributions from the Programme Guarantor, Associate Professor Violeta Tretynyk; Head of the Department Danylo Tavrov; Department Professors Oleg Chertov and Igor Orynyak; Associate Professors Liliia Vovк, Viacheslav Liskin, and Pavlo Maslianko; as well as Assistants Roman Mazuryk and Anton Tsybulnyk.

The faculty engaged in a highly productive discussion, exchanging insights on strategic updates to the program's core architecture and the specific content of individual course components. The following actionable proposals were brought forward during the session:

  • Strengthening Foundational Theory: Introduce new individual semester assignments in the form of calculus-graphical projects for the course components Algebra and Geometry: Part 1 (Semester 1) and Probability Theory (Semester 3) to deepen students' mastery of core mathematical principles.

  • Integrating Real-World Applied Use Cases: Evaluate the inclusion of specialized lectures or topics within the syllabi of foundational mathematics courses—including Algebra and Geometry (Parts 1 & 2), Calculus (Parts 1, 2 & 3), Probability Theory, and Mathematical Statistics—focused explicitly on how these theoretical mathematical concepts are directly applied within machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data analysis pipelines.

  • Mitigating High School Learning Loss: Increase the number of dedicated lecture hours for the Calculus: Part 1 course component to actively counteract recent secondary-education learning loss and normalize baseline competencies for incoming freshmen.

  • Bridging Undergraduate to Graduate Pipelines: Review the university’s elective course catalog to introduce specialized undergraduate electives designed to seamlessly prepare students for successful admission into the advanced Master’s degree programs offered by the Applied Mathematics Department.
