Message to Applicants 2025

You’re entering adulthood during a particularly challenging time: the COVID pandemic, the war, and now — the need to make one of the most important decisions for your future — where to apply and what to study. It’s crucial not to make a misstep here, because your job will take up nearly half your life: a standard 8-hour workday, plus an hour for lunch, commuting there and back, and, believe it or not, work doesn’t just stay at work — it often follows you home. :(

What do we want from a job?

We want it to match our abilities — something we can handle with confidence and even enjoy.

Well, if you’ve found your way to this page, chances are you have a logical and rational mindset, you're not afraid of mathematics, and you're interested in IT and programming.

That’s exactly we at the Applied Mathematics Department teach our students.

That the work is in demand, interesting, promising and well-paid. Is there such a job at all? Of course!

In recent years, careers in machine learning and data analytics have seen remarkable growth, reflecting their increasing importance across various industries. For example, machine learning engineer job postings have surged by 980% since 2019, with projected average salaries reaching $165,000 in 2024Additionally, LinkedIn's 2025 "Jobs on the Rise" report identified artificial intelligence engineer (in the sense of machine learning) as the fastest-growing job in the U.S..

These trends highlight the critical role of machine learning and data analytics professionals in driving innovation and efficiency across sectors.

And it’s true — there’s a big difference between simply doing programming, i.e., writing code based on a technical specification, and using mathematics and programming together to uncover hidden patterns in real-world data.

Feel the difference?

That’s why it’s important to make the right choice.

The Department of Applied Mathematics truly values and cares for its students. At the start of the war, we managed to locate and get in touch with all 369 students who were studying with us at the time. Some were in Kyiv, others in Kherson or Mariupol — but we found everyone, and all were safe and sound.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Department of Applied Mathematics in the “Machine Learning and Mathematical Modelling” educational programme!
