Document Formatting Requirements

At the Applied Mathematics Department, when preparing final assessment theses, course project reports, practice reports, laboratory work reports, and other kinds of documentation, students are required to adhere to some стандарт standards.

For students’ convenience, the Applied Mathematics Department produced guidance based on these standards that clarify and enhance their most important positions.

Page Layout

All the documents must be printed on pages with the following parameters:

  • А4 size (210х297 mm)
  • margins: top—2 cm, bottom—2 cm, left—2 cm, right—1 cm

The main document text must be written in Ukrainian and formatted in the following way:

  • font—Times New Roman, size 14
  • line spacing—1.5 lines, with no spacing “before” and “after”
  • paragraph indent must be the same throughout the text and be equal to 1.25 cm
  • the text must be justified

Structural Elements

Structural elements of the document are its chapters, sections, subsections, and such special structural elements as “Abstract” (if required, can be written in Ukrainian and English), “Content,” “List of abbreviations, terms, and concepts” (if required).” In addition:

  • chapters, sections, and subsections must have titles
  • titles of chapters and special structural elements should be centered and typeset in uppercase letters with no period after them, no underline and boldface allowed
  • titles of sections and subsections should be left aligned, paragraph indented, and typeset in lowercase letters save the first uppercase one, with no period after them, no underlining and boldface allowed

  • spacing between the title and following or preceding text must be two lines. No empty lines must be allowed between two titles
  • each chapter and the special structural element must start on a new page
  • sections and subsections must start on the current page
  • titles of sections and subsections are not allowed to appear at the bottom of the page if there is only one line of text after them
  • chapters must be continuously numbered throughout the document with Arabic numerals with no period after them, e.g., 1, 2, 3, etc.
  • sections must be continuously numbered throughout each chapter; full section number consists of period separated chapter number and section number, with no period after it, e.g., 1.1, 1.2, etc.
  • subsections must be continuously numbered throughout each subsection; full subsection number consists of period separated chapter number, section number, and subsection number, with no period after it, e.g., 1.1.1, 1.1.2, etc.

List of abbreviations, terms, and concepts

In this structural element of the document, one must list and expand abbreviations of terms and concepts that are encountered in the text more than twice (except for commonly used ones). In the text itself, after the first instance of a corresponding term or concept, its abbreviation must be given in parentheses.

Abbreviations must be listed in alphabetical order. Latin abbreviations must precede Cyrillic ones.

If there are no abbreviations in the document, this structural element can be omitted.

Figures and Tables

When including figures and tables, one must adhere to the following requirements:

Figures must be continuously numbered throughout each chapter with Arabic numerals; full figure number consists of period separated chapter number and figure number. An example of the figure caption: “Рисунок 3.1 – Схема розміщення”—the first figure in the third chapter
  • flowcharts must be formatted as figures and adhere to GOST 19.701-90 “Unified System for Program Documentation. Data, Program, and System Flowcharts, Program Network Charts and System Resources Charts. Documentation Symbols and Conventions for Flowcharting”
  • tables should be placed either immediately following the text they are first mentioned in, or on the following page

When splitting the table, its header can be replaced with column numbers. Columns should be numbered with Arabic numerals in the first table part. If the table is split in parts, “Продовження таблиці __” with the table number following it must be placed above each part, left aligned with no paragraph indent
